Smart Questions to Ask a Solar Power Company
| |
| |
A solar company is more than a sleek webpage. Here are some important questions you need to ask a solar consultant before you buy:
- How long has this solar power company been in business? Premier Power has been in business since 2001 and has installed many solar panel systems. A company should have at least 2-5 years of experience installing solar electric power systems. You want a stable company that will be around to back up its warranties in the years to come.
- What is its customer satisfaction rating? If you can't find out easily on the company website or through the Better Business Bureau, you may want to reconsider. Premier Power is proud of its 98% customer satisfaction rate.
- What organizations does the solar power company belong to? Premier Power is a proud member of CalSEIA (California Solar Energy Industries Association), ASES (American Solar Energy Society), and the Better Business Bureau, among other organizations. We are an experienced California solar power installer. Research the company’s website to see if it is a member of organizations within the solar industry.
- Does the solar installer hold a valid contractor’s license? In compliance with federal law, your solar installer must hold a valid state contractor's license. To install solar power in California, your contractor needs both a C46 and a C10 license. Installers with only a B license cannot interconnect you with the grid and will need to sub-contract out the job. Check out their license number on your local state site. In addition, your solar power company should be certified by NABCEP (the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners), the highest solar certification.

What Does a Solar Power System Include?
| |
| |
Details matter when it comes to your new solar power system. Be sure to ask your solar consultant these questions:
- Who manufactures the solar panel and inverter? Premier Power solar panel systems use the most innovative technology by manufacturers such as GE Energy and SMA America. Not only do established manufacturers offer longer warranties (5-10 years for an inverter, 25 years for solar panels), they're likely to be around if and when you need something replaced. Ask your solar power company who manufactures their solar modules and inverters before you sign a contract.
- Does the solar power company use its own employees or sub-contract out aspects of the solar installation? A company that uses its own engineers, designers, permit processors, and installers can offer greater accountability and experience. Its employees will be far more familiar with the company's procedures than a sub-contractor. Accountability and reliability are key in a solar installation.
- Will my system be interconnected? Premier Power works with your utility to connect you to the grid. Make sure the solar power company you choose handles the interconnection process.

What is Included in the Price?
| |
| |
- Are there hidden fees? Premier Power gives you the total cost for a turnkey installation up front. Companies that offer turnkey installation take care of all the details to ensure you a smooth and relatively hassle-free installation process. Make sure you understand what is included in your solar panel installation to avoid hidden costs in other companies’ bids.
- Is there a rebate for installing a solar power system in my home? Federal and state rebates are available to help offset solar power installation costs. Premier Power files all paperwork for your rebate.
- How do I apply for tax credits? Ask your solar power company for detailed information on the forms for your tax credit.
